What is Slow Food

Local – Slow Food Philadelphia / South Jersey

Our Philadelphia / South Jersey Chapter is part of Slow Food International, a non-profit organization based in Bra, Italy, with our USA offices located in Brooklyn, NY.

Our Chapter is dedicated to promoting our movement on a regional level through social and educational events and by providing support and encouragement to local concerns and organizations whose work reflects our cause. Our chapter plays a role in creating cohesion and communication among these groups to assist them in their mission. Recognizing the importance of educating our Youth, our work includes working with various School Programs and helping to promote better nutrition and the teaching of the value of eating locally and sustainably grown foods.

Our chapter members come from a wide variety of professions and backgrounds. Our chapter comes together regularly to share at organized dinners, tastings, tours, and picnics. We also lend support to local organizations and initiatives in our area that promote the richness of our area’s culinary heritage. Your membership will help us in our efforts to support the cause and provide you news, events, and information on related topics.

National – Slow Food USA

Slow Food USA is an educational organization dedicated to the stewardship of the land and ecologically sound food production; to the revival of the kitchen and the table as centers of pleasure, culture, and community, and to the invigoration and proliferation of regional, seasonal culinary traditions.

Slow Food USA’s 200 chapters seeks to create dramatic and lasting change in the food system. We reconnect Americans with the people, traditions, plants, animals, fertile soils and waters that produce our food. We work to inspire a transformation in food policy, production practices and market forces so that they ensure equity, sustainability and pleasure in the food we eat.

Global – Slow Food International

The Slow Food Movement was founded in 1989 to counteract fast food and fast life, the disappearance of local food traditions and people’s dwindling interest in the foods they consume, where it comes from, how it tastes, and how our food choices affect the rest of the world. Slow Food seeks to defend biodiversity (food variety), including indigenous and “heirloom” foods from around the world that are at risk of extinction.

Slow Food is a global, grassroots organization with supporters in 150 countries around the world who are linking the pleasure of good food with a commitment to their community and the environment.
