International Day for Biological Diversity, May 22

Each May 22, International Day for Biological Diversity reminds us of the importance of increasing biodiversity in our backyards, farms, and communities. Did you know that 75% of edible plant species around the world have become extinct?  Only three cereals–wheat, rice, and corn–make up 60% of food production.  How many of you love other grains like farro, emmer, spelt, or fonio?  To maintain these grains and other species, protection of both food products and production methods is needed.  Promoting agroecological practices and sustainable consumption are two ways we can conserve biodiversity.  To learn more, please read Slow Food USA’s biodiversity booklet.

Just as Slow Food advocates for biodiversity around the world, you too can TAKE ACTION for this cause.  Hit the “Learn More” button to the left.
